What is Compost?

Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow.

Why should you Compost?

According to the EPA, food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 28 percent of what we throw away, so it should be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Redirecting food waste as compost helps create a closed-loop food system, where your food scraps can help grow new food!

How Our Compost is Used

From Plate to Soil infographic showing the cycle from fruits and vegetables to food scraps to compost system to soil and back to you

Compost impacts more than one would think! It’s not just a way to add nutrients to your soil, it is also a way to lead to a more resilient and sustainable Albany County. We can do this by collecting, maintaining, and utilizing organic materials as a community asset.

Food waste is generated, recycled into compost within the same community, and ends up right back in our local food system, narrowing the distance from food produced in our production gardens to your plate. In short, community composting builds more resilient and sustainable communities.

How to Compost With Us!

We accept compostable materials from the public year round (with exceptions) and work with local businesses to collect compost. Bring your compost to our drop off station located at the back of the Feeding Laramie Valley building at LaBonte Park, 968 N. 9th St. in Laramie in the Compost Corner. Please place your accepted compost in the 5 gallon buckets.

We also collect compost from vendors at the Downtown Laramie Farmers Markets on Friday evenings throughout the summer! If you are a business interested in composting please email alexia@feedinglaramievalley.org
